Health Care

Health Care was studied during third year of the Bachelor of Interior design program at Sheridan College. I also included my thesis project on this page as it deals with mental health.

Flourish

Flourish is a mental Health facility for young adults located at 442 Grey street Brantford, Ontario. Mental health impacts 1 in 5 Canadians, with the top five diagnosed illnesses being; personality disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder.

Flourish is going to focus their programming and support mainly on these topics. By doing extended research on the symptoms of each illness and looking at ways to cope we have devised a thorough list that bridges the gap in mental health. The first take away from the research was, to include touch down areas for the employees. The people who are working in this facility are going to have many roles besides assisting guests. They will need places to sit down and work or make phone calls. Secondly, the facility needs to feel more like home. In the past mental health facilities have been, “very dull, dreadful, clinical, prison like and more” We want people to come here to feel safe and improve their mental health. This isn’t going to happen if people feel those negative attributes to the space. Third, make the facility easy to obtain help and information. A lot of people do not know where to get help or cannot afford it. This facility is going to be completely free or inexpensive to patients. Through government funding, sponsors, fundraising events and volunteer help we can make this possible. But there will also be information provided behind the reception for everyone to access. In addition, people will take information away from each of the programs offered. Each one of the programs will give visitors the proper knowledge and information to bring home and use as a coping devise in their everyday lives. Finally, it is important to have natural lighting and nature. This is why the windows located along the exterior will be used to enhance the spaces in addition to biophilic design.

This is your safe space, a home away from home. Through an accredited process, we help young adults get the proper care and information to help improve their mental health. By offering many programs our patients will learn to deal with symptoms associated with mental illnesses. We are not only helping the individual but bringing the community together to help each other.

Crystalline Care

We were commissioned to redesign the basement level floor plan and redesign their signage programming for Crystalline Care.

Our main objectives were to develop space planning that keeps the patient’s care and comfort first, while keeping the environment as sterile as possible without losing the aesthetic of a first class facility.

Our concept is focused on the healing properties of crystals. Crystals have been used to release mental, physical, and spiritual blockages in our bodies. Humans are naturally receptive to the positive vibrations in crystals. Different crystals release different vibrations that are beneficial to specific needs of the body. Coupling these various benefits with modern medicine was key to the design. Keeping this in mind, we designed each area to coordinate with different crystal types, utilizing their colours, angular shapes, and for wayfinding in the programming.
